Meridian is a small city sandwiched between the city of Nampa and the state capital, Boise. Except for a small radius of urban conurbations, the region is surrounded by huge flanks of forested areas. It is Idaho’s sweetest part but it never boasts or brags and is one of the reasons why it's underrated and understated. You have to discover its beauty with quite some personal effort but it’s always worth it.
The first thing that strikes people who are unknown to this city is its amazing Basque culture. Beyond that is a veil of history that is too long and academic to ponder over but the result is what strikes. You get to taste an amazing array of Basque dishes like coal-grilled fish, lamb stew, pincho, its distinct cheese and multitude of beverages. And then there is a music scene that is starkly different from the rest of the nation.
But the warmth of the city is in its colonial feel. Parisian-cafes and laid-back-bistros perched underneath historical buildings is a common sight. Most cafes and business are established on restored buildings which give the city a sentimental shade of modernity amidst a historic fragrance. The best example is the Epi's Basque Restaurant, which serves some of the most authentic dishes in a cozy and homey bungalow, built in the 19th century. If you wish to scavenge for some local history, go to the Idaho State Historical Museum, which is a treasure trove of an eventful past that created the lively present.
But the imperial façade somewhat melts down towards the city downtown which is constantly changing under economic momentum. The city being a border town between Idaho and Oregon is an important economic hub for the entire region. Its proximity to Idaho’s Capital, Boise (10 miles) and the largest city of Canyon County, Nampa (15 miles) give it additional economic sinews to scale new heights. Some of the developed industries that have deep roots in the city are pharmaceuticals, tax firms, and logistics.
When you wish to leave the city for some country air, follow your compass east towards Boise and then take the State Route 21, straight into the heart of the Boise National Forest. Here you can become a self-made naturalist or live your camping dreams to the fullest. Another great place to catch a stunning birdwatching experience is the Morley Nelson Snake River Birds of Prey National Conservation Area. For a photogenic paradise, you have to take your camera west to the Malheur National Forest, 1.7 million acres of pristine land filled with stunning cliffs, and mesmerizing lakes.
